New Love

9/19/2024

Emily Updegraff
Handwritten poem

New love is like fresh milk.
Good, but it must get better.
Add heat and salt,
pressure and darkness,
knowledge, patience, and time.
Wait until it’s solid,
rich, creamy, and potent –
the kind of thing
you save for guests
but this food is made for two.

Emily Updegraff is an MFA student at Northwestern University. She has published poems in Third Wednesday, The Orchards Poetry Journal, River and South Poetry Review, and other journals. She is a regular book review contributor at Great Lakes Review.
